The body matters.
Does feeling hungry make you more irritable or does feeling sick and tired make it more likely you will feel sad? Does it matter what you believe about your body? How can awareness of your bodily sensations feed into your perceptions and choices?
We take for granted, and maybe even sometimes forget, that the physical condition of our bodies affects our mental lives. In fact, evidence from psychology, neuroscience, and physiology reveals that every moment of life--including emotions, social perceptions, decision-making, and well-being--is fundamentally shaped by the physical state of our bodies.
I use methods from social cognition, peripheral psychophysiology, functional neuroimaging, and developmental science to understand the body's power to shape everyday experiences--be it feeling an emotion, forming your first impression of a stranger, or deciding what to eat tonight!
